Words Often Confused (Part-1)

1. Aid(मदद करना) -He often aids me.
    Add (जोड़ना) - Add four to five.
2.Accident (दुर्घटना)- He met with an accident.
   Incident  (घटना) -  Such incidents do not perturb me.
3.Allay (कम करना)- This medicine will allay your suffering.
   Alley (संकरी गली)- This is a blind alley.
4. Ail   (trouble)- It always ails me.
    Ale  (a kind of beer)- I don't like such ale.
5. Access (पहुँच)- I have no access to him.
    Excess (अधिकता)- The excess of everything is bad.
6. Adapt (के अनुसार ढालना)- He could not adapt himself to the new surroundings.
    Adept (expert)- She is adept in knitting.
    Adopt (अपनाना)- He adopted wrong methods.
7. Affect (प्रभाव डालना)- His lecture did not affect me.
    Effect ( प्रभाव)- It will have no effect on you.
8. Abstract (सारांश)- It is an abstract of his speech.
    Extract (उद्धरण)- This extract is from his book.
9.   Accede (मान लेना)- He acceded to our demands.
      Exceed (अधिक होना)- His expenditure exceeded his income.
10. Advise (सलाह देना)- He advised me to go there.
      Advice (सलाह)- He gave me good advice.
11. Artist (कलाकार)-   He is a great artist.
      Artisan (कारीगर)- They are poor artisans.
12. Allusion (प्रसंग)- I dislike to make any allusion to his way of speaking.
      Illusion (भ्रम) - You are under illusion.
13. Altar (बलिवेदी)- He sacrificed everything at the altar of the goddess.
      Alter (change)- He often alters his opinion.
14. Aught (something) - For aught he knows leisure.
      Ought (should)- He ought to help you.
15. Apposite (उचित)- Such step was quite apposite.
      Opposite (ठीक सामने/विलोम)- There is a tree opposite my house.
16. Bad (खराब)- He is a bad boy.
      Bade (wished)- He bade me good morning.
17. Bare (वीरान)- The countryside was quite bare.
      Bear (सहना)- He can't bear such pain.
18. Bale (गाँठ)- This is a bale of cotton.
      Bail (जमानत)- The bail was not granted to him.
19. Boarder (छात्रावास में रहने वाला)- All the boarders have been asked to vacate the hostel.
      Border (किनारा)- The border of this curtain is ornamental.
20. Beside (by the side of)- He was sitting beside me.
      Besides (अतिरिक्त)- He knows English besides French.
21. Berth (जगह)- I reserved a birth in the train.
      Birth (जन्म)- The baby weighed five pounds at birth.
22. Ball (गेंद)- They are with a ball.
      Bowl (कटोरा)- The beggar has nothing but a bowl.
23. Born (पैदा हुआ)- He was born in 1980.
      Borne (लाया हुआ)- Smallpox is an air-borne disease.
24. Bath (स्नान)- He took a bath.
      Bathe (स्नान करना)- He bathes in the river.
25. Boy (लड़का)- He is naughty boy.
      Buoy (floating object)- The buoy saved his life.
26. Bread (रोटी)- Give him a piece of bread.
      Braid (रत्नजड़ित सामान)- Her sari was covered with gold braid.
27. Check (examine)- He checked our tickets.
      Cheque (bank cheque)- He gave me a cheque for Rs. 500.
28. Canvas (किरमिच)- I use canvas shoes.
      Canvass (प्रचार करना)- He canvasses for his party candidate.
29. Corps (कोर, टुकड़ी)- He is a member of this corps.
      Corpse (लाश)- The corpse was stinking.
30. Complement (पूरक)- They made him king. Here 'king' is a complement.
      Compliment (अभिवादन)- Say my warm compliments to your father.
31.  Continuously (लगातार बिना रुके)- It has been raining continuously for two hours.
       Continually (लगातार पर रुक-रुक कर)- He has been learning English continually for years.
32.  Confirm (पुष्टि करना)- I was confirmed in my service.
       Conform (के अनुकूल होना)- This does not conform to rules.
33.  Confident (आश्वस्त)- Are you confident of your success?
       Confidant (विश्वासी व्यक्ति)- She is my confidant.
34.  Career ( course of life)- By securing third class in the examination he spoiled his career.
       Carrier (ढोने वाला)- He has no carrier in his cycle.
35.  Carriage (गाड़ी)- A carriage  is waiting at the door.
       Courage (साहस)- This boy has no courage.
36.  Compare (तुलना करना)- Compare this book with that.
       Compere (उद्घोषक)- Mr. A is a renowned compere.
37.   To the contrary (विरोध में )- I have nothing to say to the contrary.
        On the contrary (इसके विपरीत)- He is not rich, on the contrary he is utterly poor.
38.   Considerable (much)- He has a considerable income.
        Considerate (thoughtful)- He is always considerate to elderly people.
39.   Contract (ठेका)- He signed a contract with us.
        Construct (निर्माण करना)- He constructed this building.
40.   Corporal  (शारीरिक)- No corporal punishment is given to children now.
        Corporeal (for the body)- His corporeal needs are not fulfilled.
41.   Counsel (advice)- He gave me good counsel on my problems.
        Council (group of persons)- He is a member of the Legislative Council.
42.   Canon (church law)- The Christians are to follow the canon.
        Cannon (तोप)- In olden times they used a cannon in battles.
43.   Cheap (सस्ता)- He bought a cheap pen.
        Cheep (छोटी चिड़िया की तरह आवाज करना)- The baby made a cheep.
44.   Civic (नागरिक)- Some of us have no civic sense.
        Civil (not military)- He was admitted to a civil hospital.
45.   Cloth (बिना सिले कपड़े)- He deals in cloths.
        Clothes (सिले सिलाये कपड़े)- He put his clothes into this wardrobe.
46.   Comma (अल्प विराम)- Put a comma after that word.
        Coma  (बेहोशी)- The patient is still in comma.
47.   Dependent (आश्रित)- The boy is not dependent on his parents.
        Dependant (आश्रित व्यक्ति)- I have to support a number of dependants.
48.   Decease (death)- His decease shocked us all.
        Disease (बीमारी)- Cancer is a serious disease.
49.   Draught (हवा का झोंका)- Be away from the draught of the wind.
        Drought (सूखा)- Bihar is facing drought.
50.   Destiny (नियति)- It was his destiny to meet with such an accident.
        Destination(लक्ष्य, goal)- He died before he reached his destination.
51.   Distinct (स्पष्ट) - There is a distinct improvement in his health.
        Distinctive (एक-दूसरे से बिल्कुल भिन्न) The boys of this school wear a distinctive uniform.
52.   Dual (द्वय)- They sit on dual desks.
        Duel (मल्लयुद्ध)- Ram was killed in a duel.
53.   Die (मरना)- He is going to die soon.
        Dye (रंगना)- They are dyeing cloths.
54.   Defy (उल्लंघन करना)- He defied the ban imposed by the Govt.
        Deify (देवता की तरह पूजा करना)- We deify Gandhiji.
55.   Differ (फर्क होना)- I differ with you.
        Defer (postpone)- The meeting was deferred to a later date.
56.   Deficit (घाटे का)- The Govt. presented a deficit budget.
        Deficient (कम)- He is deficient in commonsense.
57.   Delicate (tender,मुलायम)- This cup is very delicate. He is in delicate health.
        Delegate (representative)- We sent some delegates to the meeting.
58.   Dissent (अस्वीकृति)- He gave a note of dissent to the proposal.
        Decent (beautiful)- It was a decent performance.
        Descent (वंशज)- They were the descents of the Aryans.
59.   Discreet (careful)- I maintained a discreet silence.
        Discrete (discontinuous)- It was a discrete discussion.
60.   Deceased (dead)- Nobody knew the deceased person.
        Diseased (बीमार)- The diseased man is my servant.
61.   Dear (प्यारा)- He is my dear friend.
        Deer (हिरण)- I saw a number of deer there.
62.   Devise (योजना बनाना)- He devised to open a shop.
        Device (योजना/युक्ति)- It was a device to kill mice.
63.   Eligible (fit to be chosen)- He is not eligible for this post.
        Illegible (नहीं पढ़ा जाने लायक)- His signature was illegible.
64.   Emigrant (विदेश में जाकर रहने वाला)- They are emigrants to Sri Lanka.
        Immigrant (विदेश से आकर रहने वाला)- He is an immigrant from Pakistan.
65.   Elicit (प्राप्त करना)- He elicited this information from me.
        Illicit (गैरकानूनी)- He deals in illicit liquor.
66.   Estimate (अनुमानित खर्च)- He gave us an estimate of this building.
        Estimation (राय)- In my estimation he is guilty.
67.   Eminent (renowned)- He is an eminent professor.
        Imminent (अवश्यम्भावी)- His success is imminent.
68.   Except (अलावा)- Except Ram nobody passed in English.
        Accept (स्वीकार करना)- He gladly accepted my invitation.
69.   Efficacious (प्रभावकारी)- This medicine is very efficacious.
        Efficient (योग्य)- Mr. Amit is an efficient teacher.
70.   Enable (make able)- I enabled him to solve this problem.
        Unable (not able)- I am unable to do it.
71.   Facilitate (सहज बनाना)- This device facilitated my work.
        Felicitate (अभिनन्दन करना)- He was felicitated on his election.
72.   Flagrant (clear)- He was found guilty of flagrant violation of rules.
        Fragrant (scented)- I like this fragrant oil.
73.   Farther (अधिक दूर)-  Ram went far; his brother went farther.
        Further (आगे)- He further said that he was sick.
74.   Fare (भाड़ा)- What is the fare to Mumbai.
        Fair (मेला)- I visited the village fair.
75.   Floor (फर्श)- He was sitting on the floor.
        Flour (आटा)- It is a flour mill.
        Flower (फूल)- It is a beautiful flower.
76.   Follow (पीछा करना)- He followed his leader.
        Fallow (barren, बंजर )- This land is fallow.
        Fellow (person)- This fellow is a fool.
77.   Foul (नियम विरुद्ध)-He plays foul.
        Fowl (bird for food)- He keeps fowl.
78.   Fatal (causing death)- The accident was fatal.
        Fateful (भविष्य बनाने वाला)- 15th August, 1947 was a fateful day for us.
79.   Feud (पारिवारिक झगड़ा)- He was involved in a feud.
        Food (भोजन)- He has enough food to eat.
80.   Fate (भाग्य)- His fate was doomed.
        Fete (उत्सव)- I attended the fete of the villagers.
81.   Ferocious (cruel, violent)- When he pelted the snake it became ferocious.
        Furious (angry)- The teacher became furious when Mohan disobeyed him.

83.   Graceful (beautiful)- Hema was a graceful girl.
        Gracious (kind)- Mr. Aman is a gracious man.

        Gait (चाल)- Her gait is very strange.

        Gaol (जेल)- The police sent him to gaol.

87.   God (देवता)- We worship different gods.
        Goad (urge)- He goaded them to do it.
88.   Hoard (जमाखोरी करना)- He hoarded a lot of petrol.
        Horde (झुण्ड)- A horde of boys was there.
89.   Hue (colour)-The hue of the sky was bright red.
        Hew (काटना)- Who will hew the timber?
90.   Haul (खींचना)- The fisherman hauled up the fish in the net.
        Howl (गुर्राना)- The wolf is howling.
91.   Hare (खरगोश)- The hare runs fast.
        Hair (बाल)- His hair is grey.
92.   Heir (उत्तराधिकारी)- He is my heir.
        Air (हवा)- The air was cool.
93.   Human (मानव)- We are human beings.
        Humane (kind)- He is very humane, therefore he is loved by all.
94.   Hit (मारना)- He hit me on the head.
        Heat (गर्म करना)- Heat the iron before striking it.
95.   Imaginary (काल्पनिक)- This story is imaginary.
        Imaginative (showing imagination)- She is an imaginative writer.
96.   Industrial (औद्योगिक)- Jamshedpur is an industrial city.
        Industrious (परिश्रमी)- He is very industrious.
97.   Intimate (bosom, अन्तरंग)- He is my intimate friend.
        Intimation (information)- Who gave you this intimation.
98.   Informer (one who informs against a criminal)- They killed the police informer.
        Informant (one who informs)- My informant told me that the meeting would be postponed.
99.   Idle (सुस्त)- He is idle, so nobody likes him.
        Ideal (आदर्श)- Kriti is an ideal student.
        Idol (मूर्ति)- We worship idols.
100. Ice (बर्फ)- Water is changed into ice.
