The Noun : Number

There are two numbers in English:-
1.Singular Number (एकवचन)
2. Plural Number (बहुवचन)
A noun that denotes one person or thing is said to be in the Singular Number.
For example:- boy, book, cow, table, mango, wife, etc.
(अर्थात् जिस संज्ञा शब्द से किसी एक व्यक्ति एवं वस्तु का बोध होता है, एकवचन कहलाता है|)
A noun that denotes more than one person or thing is said to be in the Plural Number.
For example:- boys, books, cows, tables,mangoes, wives, etc.
(अर्थात् जिस संज्ञा शब्द से एक से अधिक व्यक्ति या वस्तुओं का बोध होता है, बहुवचन कहलाता है|)

Rules of Conversion of Number:-

Singular Number से Plural Number में परिवर्तन करने के निम्न नियम हैं-

1. अधिकांशतः Singular Number को Plural Number में बदलने के लिए Singular number के आगे 's' जोड़ देते हैं| उदाहरण-

2. जिन Nouns के अंत में s, sh, ch, x आता है उनको Plural में परिवर्तित करने के लिए es लगा देते हैं| जैसे-

Watch	Watches	Tax	Taxes
Box	Boxes	Branch	Branches

3. जिन Nouns के अंत में o आता है, उनका Plural बनाने के लिए es जोड़ देते हैं| जैसे-

Mosquito	Mosquitoes	Volcano	Volcanoes

 4. जिन शब्दों के अंत में oo, io, eo, yo आता है, उनका Plural बनाने के लिए केवल 's' ही लगाते हैं| जैसे-

Cuckoo	Cuckoos	Embryo	Embryos
Curio	Curios	Ratio	Ratios
Cameo	Cameos	Stereo	Stereos

5. जब किसी Noun के अंत में 'y' आए और 'y' से पहले कोई Consonant हो तो 'y'  के स्थान पर ies कर देते हैं| जैसे-

Baby	Babies	Story	Stories
Duty	Duties	Country	Countries
Puppy	Puppies	Quality	Qualities

लेकिन यदि 'y' से पहले कोई Vowel आया हो (जैसे-ay, ey, oy) तो उसमें केवल 's' लगाते हैं|  जैसे-

6. जिन Nouns  के अंत में 'f' या 'fe' आता है उनमें 'f' या 'fe'  के स्थान पर 'ves' लगाते हैं| जैसे -

7. कुछ Nouns ऐसी हैं जिनका  Plural बनाने के लिए उनके अन्दर के Vowel में परिवर्तन करते हैं| जैसे-

  8. कुछ Noun के Plural बनाने के लिए 'en' या 'ne'  लगा देते हैं| जैसे-

Cow	Kine (but also cows)	Brother (but also brothers)	Brethren

9. कुछ Nouns ऐसी हैं जिनका रूप Singular एवं Plural दोनों में एक-सा रहता है| जैसे-

public, police, innings, gross, yoke, sheep, deer, fish, swine, hair, dozen, score, hundred, thousand, pound, series, species, means.

10. Compound Nouns के Plural बनाने के लिए मुख्य शब्द (principal word) में 's' जोड़ते हैं| जैसे-

11.Letters (a,b,c,d,आदि ), Figures, Abbreviations तथा Symbols को Plural बनाने के लिए Apostrophe's लगाते हैं| जैसे-a's, b's, r's, 5's, 3's, 3 M.L.A.'s, 2 B.A.'s
