Parts of a Sentence
Subject and Predicate
Every sentence consists of two parts:
1.The person or thing we speak about.
2. What we speak about that parson or thing.
Look at the following sentence:
Rohit is an intelligent boy.
In this sentence
(1).We speak about Rohit, and ( 2). what we say about him is that he is an intelligent boy.
'The part of a sentence which names the person or thing that we talk about is called the subject.
'The part which contains a verb and says something about the subject is called the predicate.
Examine the Subject and the Predicate in each of the following sentences:
Subject Predicate
He sacrificed for his country.
The peacock is our national bird.
The poor little girl sat in a corner.
I am very happy.
Note: The subject usually comes first, but sometimes it is put after the predicate.
The subject is often omitted in commands.
'Is', 'am', 'are' will always be in the predicate column.
