Prepositions - दो शब्दों से मिलकर बना है- Pre + position. यहाँ pre का अर्थ है पहले और position का अर्थ है placed , अर्थात् वह शब्द या phrase जो किसी Noun या Pronoun  से पहले प्रयोग किया जाता है| यह सम्बन्ध सूचक शब्द या phrase होता है जो किसी वाक्य में उक्त Noun या Pronoun का सम्बन्ध किसी दूसरे शब्द से स्थापित करता है| Definition- A preposition is a word placed before a noun or pronoun to show the relation between the noun or pronoun and some other word.अर्थात् सम्बन्ध-सूचक अव्यय या पूर्वसर्ग (Prepositions) वे शब्द हैं जो किसी वाक्य में आए हुए संज्ञा या सर्वनाम का सम्बन्ध वाक्य के अन्य शब्दों से बताते हैं| The Noun or Pronoun before which a Preposition is placed is called the object of the Preposition.
